Bulldogs host season opener Nassaney Invitational Saturday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's and women's cross country seasons kick off with the 18th annual Nassaney Invitational on Saturday. The women's 5K race is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m. with the men's 8K to follow at 10:45 a.m.

The women's team brings a lot of fresh faces to the squad as the Bulldogs will be competing with a young team this season comprised of four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors, and no seniors. Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) will be leading the team as a captain this year after a successful season last year. Last season at Nassaney, Sullivan finished with her season-best time.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs have four returning seniors who will be leading the way, incluing captain Matt McGovern (Long Beach, N.Y.), who was one of Bryant's top runners last season. McGovern competed in five out of the seven events last season and finished among the top three finishing times for the Bulldogs in each appearance. McGovern also recorded the best time for the Bulldogs during the NCAA Regionals.

13 schools, including Bryant, are set to run in the 2018 race. For the women, Assumption, Boston College, Central Connecticut, Fairleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross, LIU Brooklyn, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Sacred Heart, Stonehill, and Wagner will compete. For the men, Assumption, Boston College, Central Connecticut, Fairleigh Dickinson, Holy Cross, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Sacred Heart, Stonehill, and Wagner will be in action.

As a team, the men finished fourth out of six teams and the women finished fifth out of seven during last year's Nassaney Invitational. Noah Tellier (North Kingstown, R.I.) was the top Bryant runner finishing 13th with a time of 26:58.8 in the 8K. Sullivan was the top finisher for the returning women, finishing 21st with a time of 18:55.0 in the 5K.

The Nassaney Invitational will follow the same schedule as in previous years. The day will start at 9 a.m. with the Shawn M. Nassaney Memorial Race/Walk. At 9:45 a.m. a one-mile Children's Race will begin.
